This is a snapshot of my collaboration with shō performer Chatori Shimizu. Chatori is a scholar of Japanese imperial court music (Gagaku) who I met soon after arriving in New York City. Chatori eventually left NYC, but we had always kept in touch, so when he visited NYC in March of 2019 we met up to work on an overdub for a recording project of mine. With the overdub complete and a little bit of studio time left, we decided to just improvise and see what comes out. This is the result of it. I’ve sat with these recordings without a clear outlet in mind, but as the world entered an era of uncertainty and isolation, I thought it was an appropriate time to share the music. I hope it brings a sense of stillness and peace in the midst of hardship. Thanks for listening.
